New Delhi: Congress leader Rahul Gandhi celebrated Diwali in a unique way this year, by stepping into the kitchen of one of Old Delhi’s oldest and most iconic sweet shops, Ghantewala, to try his hand at preparing ‘imarti’ and ‘besan laddoo’.

On Monday, Gandhi shared a video on X showcasing his visit to the legendary confectionery as part of his Diwali greetings. The clip shows him interacting with the shop’s owners and learning how the traditional sweets are made.

“Tried my hand at making imarti and besan laddoo at the famous and historic Ghantewala sweet shop in old Delhi,” the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha said. “The sweetness of this centuries-old, iconic shop remains the same - pure, traditional, and heartwarming.”

The Congress leader also used the occasion to share a message about the festival’s spirit, writing that the true sweetness of Diwali lies not just in the ‘thali’ but also in relationships and community.

In the video, the shop’s owner is seen telling Gandhi that the establishment had once served his grandmother, father and other members of the family, adding that they now hope to prepare sweets for his wedding someday. Gandhi smiled at the remark before joining the sweet makers at work.

Gandhi is seen carefully shaping the ‘imarti’ batter and rolling the ‘besan laddoos’, appreciating the traditional craftsmanship behind each delicacy. He remarks that the sweets are made in a traditional manner and require considerable effort and skill.

In a separate post on X, Gandhi extended Diwali greetings to the nation, saying, “May India be illuminated with the lamps of joy, may the light of happiness, prosperity, and love spread in every home.”
