Senior Dietician Aruna Mallya from KMC Hospital, Mangalore, shares simple, sustainable post-Diwali detox tips that focus on mindful eating, hydration, and movement — no crash diets or guilt required.

Bengaluru: The lights may have dimmed after Diwali, but the aftereffects of endless sweets, fried snacks, and heavy meals can linger on. Even those who claim to “avoid sweets” usually give in to a bite (or two) of laddoo or kaju katli during the festivities. What follows, for many, is a wave of guilt — and a desperate attempt to undo the indulgence with juice cleanses, fasting, or skipping meals altogether.
Speaking to Mathrubhumi, Aruna Mallya, Senior Dietitian at KMC Hospital, Mangalore, a true post-festival detox isn’t about punishing your body — it’s about mindful recovery. “Being mindful while eating during the festival and continuing small, sustainable habits afterwards is the right way to reset,” she says.
Eat Smart, Not Less
The key to detoxing after Diwali lies in balance — not restriction. “Cutting down on fried items and refined sugars is a simple but effective first step,” advises Mallya. Instead of depriving yourself, fill your plate with fiber-rich foods such as vegetables, salads, soups, sprouts, leafy greens, and fruits. These not only add bulk to your meals but also keep digestion smooth and hunger in check.
Protein is another unsung hero of the detox process. “High biological value proteins like eggs, fish, chicken, pulses, and dals help regulate appetite and rebuild strength,” she explains. Including lean protein in every meal helps maintain muscle mass while burning those extra festive calories.
Hydrate and Move
If there’s one thing your body craves after all the sweets and snacks, it’s hydration. Drinking plenty of water helps flush out toxins and supports your metabolism's recovery. Mallya also recommends adding a few extra minutes of physical activity to your daily routine — whether that means walking an extra mile, climbing stairs instead of taking the lift, or squeezing in a quick home workout.
“Festival calories can be managed if you consciously move more — not just after Diwali, but during it as well,” she notes.
Mindful All Year Round
While festivals come once a year, health is an everyday responsibility. “Being healthy isn’t seasonal — it’s a 365-day commitment,” says Mallya. “The key is mindfulness. Enjoy the festivities, but listen to your body and find your balance.”
So, as the festive glow fades, let your post-Diwali days be about recharging, not repenting. With a few smart food choices, regular movement, and mindful habits, you can keep the sparkle alive — both inside and out.
