Chennai: Following a brilliant performance in the Tamil Nadu Assembly elections and securing support from the Congress, Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) president Vijay met with State Governor Rajendra Arlekar to stake his claim to form the government. However, reports suggest that the Governor stated the figures provided by Vijay were not convincing. This development comes amid widespread rumours that Vijay was set to be sworn in as Chief Minister this Thursday, after he submitted a list of supporting MLAs to the Governor. The swearing-in ceremony now hangs in uncertainty.

In the 234-seat Tamil Nadu Assembly, the TVK won 108 seats. Even before the Congress formally announced its support, Vijay had written to the Governor seeking an invitation to form the government. Following the Congress's endorsement, he met the Governor in person to hand over the list of legislators. The Congress secured five seats in the election; however, even with their backing, the TVK cannot claim an absolute majority on its own. Vijay had previously informed the Governor that he could prove his majority within two weeks.
Swearing-in hopes dashed

According to reports, the Governor has now maintained that the swearing-in can only take place once the majority is proven. Governor Arlekar has reportedly demanded that Vijay produce letters of support from 118 MLAs (the required majority mark). It is indicated that the Governor will permit the swearing-in ceremony only upon the submission of these letters.

It is expected that the Cabinet will take the oath along with Vijay. There are indications that the Congress may receive two ministerial berths, although reports currently suggest their support is unconditional. Sources hint that the new Cabinet will prioritise the common man and marginalised sections of society.

This marks the first time in decades since the era of K Kamaraj that someone from outside the primary Dravidian parties (DMK and AIADMK) is poised to become Chief Minister. This transition signals an end to the continuous rule of Dravidian stalwarts such as Annadurai, Karunanidhi, MGR, Jayalalithaa and Stalin. Vijay is effectively beginning a new chapter in the political history of Tamil Nadu.
