President Droupadi Murmu has nominated former Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh as a member of the Upper House following the retirement of former Chief Justice of India Ranjan Gogoi.

New Delhi: Droupadi Murmu has nominated Harivansh Narayan Singh, the outgoing Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha, as a nominated member of the Council of States, following a vacancy created by the retirement of Ranjan Gogoi.
Harivansh’s earlier tenure as a Rajya Sabha member ended on April 9, marking the completion of his two terms representing Bihar in the Upper House.
Nomination under Article 80 of the Constitution
According to an official government notification, the nomination has been made under the provisions of Article 80 of the Constitution of India, which empowers the President to nominate members to the Rajya Sabha.
“In exercise of the powers conferred by sub-clause (a) of clause (1) of article 80 of the Constitution of India, read with clause (3) of that article, the President is pleased to nominate Shri Harivansh to the Council of States to fill the vacancy caused due to retirement of one of the nominated members,” the notification stated.

Harivansh returns to the Upper House
The 69-year-old parliamentarian has played a key role in parliamentary proceedings, having served as the Deputy Chairman of the Rajya Sabha. His renomination ensures continuity in legislative experience and parliamentary functioning.
The development is significant in the context of Rajya Sabha nominations, which are aimed at bringing experienced individuals from diverse fields into the legislative process.
Harivansh’s return to the Upper House is expected to strengthen deliberations and contribute to the functioning of the Indian Parliament, particularly amid evolving political and policy discussions.
