New Delhi: Rajya Sabha proceedings were adjourned until 2 pm on Wednesday after an uproar over an alleged derogatory remark made by BJP MP Sushmita Dev against CPM MP John Brittas.

The issue was raised by Brittas soon after listed papers were laid on the table at the start of the day’s proceedings. He alleged that Dev had repeatedly referred to him as “lungiwala” during the Rajya Sabha proceedings on Monday.

Brittas said he was moving a statutory resolution against the Income Tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026 when Dev left her allotted seat and moved to a seat immediately behind him.

“She repeatedly called me lungiwala,” Brittas alleged.

The CPM MP had earlier moved a privilege motion against Dev over the remark.

The allegation triggered a heated exchange in the House, with Opposition MPs supporting Brittas while members of the Treasury benches sought an opportunity for Dev to present her side before any decision was taken.

Rajya Sabha Chairman C P Radhakrishnan said members should avoid making remarks that could hurt the sentiments and feelings of fellow MPs. He said the country’s culture was unique and inclusive and stressed the need for mutual respect in the House.

Radhakrishnan said he would call the MPs concerned to his chamber to discuss the matter and resolve the issue.

Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju and Leader of the House J P Nadda also urged the Chairman to allow Dev to speak.

Amid the continued uproar, the Chair adjourned the proceedings until 2 pm.
