Bihar: Shyam Rajak of JD(U) won Phulwari constituency with as many 126470 votes when counting, which commenced at 8 am under the supervision of the Election Commission of India, concluded. Phulwari, a key urban-semi-urban constituency in Patna district, went to the polls during the first phase of Bihar assembly elections. Election officials have deployed multiple counting tables, returning officers, and agents to ensure transparency.

As counting progressed, Gopal Ravi Das of CPI(ML)(L) surged ahead with 51,586 votes, overtaking JD(U)’s Shyam Rajak, who had initially led in the early rounds. Later, Shyam Rajak made a comeback with a lead of 32,657 votes over Gopal Ravi Das who won 93,813 votes. Shashi Kant Prasad of Jan Suraaj Party) emerged third with 11,100 votes.

Multi-cornered contest

Phulwari witnessed a competitive race with candidates from several parties:

  • Shyam Rajak (JD(U)) – long-time representative and prominent local leader.
  • Gopal Ravi Das (CPI(ML)(L)) – left-wing challenger making strong inroads.
  • Other candidates – including BJP, AAP and multiple independents.

This multi-cornered contest demonstrates the fragmented voter base and diverse political competition in the constituency.

Voter demographics and turnout

Phulwari has a mixed electorate comprising urban and semi-urban voters, with a significant proportion of backward classes and minority communities. The constituency recorded a healthy voter turnout, consistent with trends across the first phase of Bihar elections, indicating active engagement from the electorate.

Historical context and local dynamics

Shyam Rajak has been a prominent JD(U) figure in Phulwari, holding influence over party loyalists. However, CPI(ML)(L) has gradually expanded its grassroots presence, and Das’s current lead suggests that localised support and possibly anti-incumbency factors played a role in the vote swing.

Counting process and transparency measures

The Election Commission has deployed multiple counting tables and 18,000 counting agents across Bihar’s constituencies, ensuring robust oversight. In Phulwari, the counting process has been reported as smooth, with no major incidents, reflecting the ECI’s commitment to a fair tally.

Implications for Bihar assembly elections

The Phulwari outcome could have wider implications for the state elections. A CPI(ML)(L) win would strengthen left-wing representation and potentially reduce JD(U)’s seat share within the NDA alliance. Analysts are monitoring Phulwari along with neighboring constituencies like Mokama and Bankipur to assess broader electoral trends and the NDA’s overall performance.
