New Delhi/Islamabad: In the wake of the deadly terror attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed several lives, diplomatic ties between India and Pakistan have once again taken a sharp downturn. While official statements and military posturing dominate headlines, another unexpected battleground has emerged — social media.
India has directly blamed Pakistan for orchestrating the attack, accusing it of continuing to support "cross-border terrorism." Authorities in New Delhi have identified the attackers as members of Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT), a Pakistan-based terrorist organisation banned by the United Nations. In retaliation, India has taken firm steps, including suspending the Indus Waters Treaty, a longstanding water-sharing agreement between the two nations.
Pakistan, meanwhile, has dismissed India’s accusations as “frivolous,” denying any involvement. However, as political and military tensions escalate, the reaction online, particularly from Pakistani users, has taken a surprisingly humorous turn, turning social media into a space of satire, trolling, and self-deprecating comedy.
Pakistan trolls... itself?
What has caught the internet’s attention is not just the expected wave of nationalist fervour, but the way many users have responded with memes that roast their own country’s state of affairs.
One viral meme, shared after India threatened to halt water supplies under the Indus Waters Treaty, features a person covered in soap, standing under a dry showerhead. The caption: “Please bhaizaan, give us water, soap got in my eyes.”
Another popular tweet reads, “The funniest shit is there is absolutely nothing India can threaten us with that we aren’t already suffering from at the hands of our government.” The user continued in a biting tone “Stop water? We barely get any. Kill us? Our government’s already on it. Take Lahore? You’ll return it in half an hour.”
Another meme showed the daily struggles of gas shortages, with a user writing, “India, if you wanna attack, please do it before 9 — after 9:15 our gas is cut off.” That was met with a sarcastic reply, “Don’t joke more. We’re already begging for flour, water, and now gas too." To which the owner of the twitter handle responds, "let them know who they’re planning to fight with.”
One tweet poked fun at the enthusiasm for war among Pakistanis living abroad. "Hello India, Pakistan is all set, ready. Bring it on!” To which a user replied: “Bro, you’re tweeting from Dubai. Don’t make us scapegoats from safety.”
When Indian users posted aggressive messages about nuking Lahore, a Pakistani user responded with a GIF of Bollywood actor Nana Patekar casually brushing off the idea, captioned: “Chal, chal (Get lost).”
