The sacred month of Sawan (Shravan) is considered one of the holiest periods in the Hindu calendar, especially dedicated to Lord Shiva. Among the various festivals celebrated during this time, Nag Panchami holds a special place in the hearts of devotees. This ancient festival, observed on the fifth day (Panchami) of the bright fortnight (Shukla Paksha) of the Shravan month, is devoted to the worship of serpent deities or Nagas.

Significance of Nag Panchami

Nag Panchami is rooted in deep spiritual symbolism and ancient Vedic traditions. According to Hindu beliefs, worshipping snake gods on this day helps eliminate life’s obstacles, brings peace and prosperity to the household, and protects against the harmful influence of planetary doshas like Kaal Sarp Dosh. This dosh (flaw), when present in an individual's birth chart, is said to bring recurring struggles and misfortunes.

Performing the rituals of Nag Panchami with sincerity is also believed to earn the blessings of Lord Shiva, who is often depicted with a serpent around his neck, symbolising fearlessness and divine control over ego and death.

What to do on Nag Panchami

1. Wear clean clothes: Begin the day with a bath and wear clean, preferably traditional, attire before starting prayers.

2. Worship Lord Shiva and snake deities: Offer prayers to Lord Shiva and Nag Devtas. Chant powerful mantras such as:

“Om Namah Shivaya”

“Om Namo Bhagavate Vasukeshwaraya”

3. Recite the 'Sarp Sukt': A sacred hymn dedicated to serpents, the recitation of sarp Sukt is considered highly auspicious and effective in nullifying planetary defects.

4. Offerings to serpent gods:

Present milk, flowers, raw rice (akshat), and durva grass to snake idols or anthills where serpents are believed to reside.

These offerings are symbolic of respect, peace, and a plea for protection.

6. Draw serpent symbols at home: In rural regions, it is customary to draw snake figures near the main entrance using cow dung or turmeric paste. Especially when women create these symbols, the act is seen as spiritually potent, believed to dispel negative energies and attract abundance.

What not to do on Nag Panchami

1. Avoid digging the Earth: Digging soil, cutting trees, or performing any similar farming activities is strictly prohibited on this day. It is believed that doing so may harm snakes or disturb their dwellings.

2. Never harm or scare snakes: Harming a snake on Nag Panchami is considered extremely inauspicious and invites bad karma. Instead, show reverence and offer them food items like milk, jaggery, and rice.
