Bhubaneswar: In preparation for the severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana,’ the Odisha government announced on Monday that schools in 14 affected districts will be closed from October 23 to 25.

The Special Relief Commissioner, DK Singh, informed the Commissioner-cum-Secretary of the School and Mass Education Department about this decision. The districts affected include Ganjam, Puri, Jagatsinghpur, Kendrapara, Bhadrak, Balasore, Mayurbhanj, Keonjhar, Dhenkanal, Jajpur, Angul, Khordha, Nayagarh, and Cuttack.

These areas are expected to experience rough weather due to the storm. “Keeping in view, the schools in the above districts from 23rd October to 25th October 2024 shall remain closed as a precautionary measure. It is, therefore, requested to please take necessary action in this regard under intimation to this Department,” instructed SRC Singh.

Revenue and Disaster Management Minister Suresh Pujari urged the district administration of Puri to ensure that tourists stay away, as the area is likely to be hit hard by the storm. Devotees currently in Puri have been advised to leave the coastal city starting October 22.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) warns that the severe cyclonic storm ‘Dana’ is expected to form in the Bay of Bengal on October 23. It is likely to cross the north Odisha and West Bengal coasts, between Puri and Sagar Island, on the night of October 24 and early morning of October 25, with wind speeds reaching 100-110 km/h, gusting up to 120 km/h.

Rainfall is expected to begin in coastal areas on October 23, with extremely heavy rain anticipated in some regions on October 24 and 25.
