Mumbai: The Bombay High Court on Friday barred an X account from impersonating playback singer Sonu Nigam, as reported by Bar and Bench.

The account, run by Sonu Nigam Singh, was ordered to display his full name to prevent confusion.

Singer Sonu Nigam filed the petition, accusing Singh, a criminal lawyer from Bihar, of posting communal and political content under his name, alleging a violation of his personality rights.

Advocate Hiren Kamod, representing the singer, informed the court that Singh falsely presented himself as Sonu Nigam and posted controversial content without clarifying his identity. Singh also accepted praise meant for the singer and made derogatory remarks about the Royal Challengers Bengaluru IPL team.

Though there’s no evidence of commercial gain, Kamod argued Singh benefited socially by gaining over 90,000 X followers, including figures like Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Smriti Irani. He stressed that this misrepresentation has caused ongoing online abuse toward the singer and his family.

Nigam had originally quit Twitter in 2017, shortly after his colleague and fellow singer Abhijeet Bhattacharya’s account was suspended.

After hearing the arguments, the court ordered Singh to stop misrepresenting himself as Sonu Nigam and directed him to use his full name, Sonu Nigam Singh, as his display name on X.
