Mumbai: After days of heavy rain that caused flooding, traffic jams and delays in trains and flights, Mumbai is now under a yellow alert for Thursday. The city had previously been placed under red and orange warnings due to heavy rainfall.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) on Thursday forecast light rain and generally cloudy skies across Mumbai and its suburbs. This marks a welcome relief for residents after six consecutive days of heavy rain.

For the wider Konkan region, the IMD has predicted light to moderate showers in most districts.

Moderate rainfall is also likely at many locations in South Madhya Maharashtra, while parts of North Maharashtra are expected to see rain at a few spots.

Marathwada, meanwhile, may only experience light showers.

Which districts are under alert?

A yellow alert has been issued in several districts today, including Mumbai, Pune, Thane, Ahmednagar, Solapur, Satara, Jalna, and Nagpur. However, no warnings are currently in place for certain regions such as Buldhana, Akola, and Gondia.

According to the forecast, the city’s skies will remain mostly cloudy with moderate to heavy rainfall at isolated places. Temperatures are likely to range between 28°C and 24°C throughout the day.

Are schools and offices open?

Schools and colleges across most of Mumbai are expected to remain open and operate as usual.

In contrast, the Lonavala Municipal Council has declared a holiday for all schools on Thursday. The order applies to primary, secondary, and higher secondary institutions across all boards and mediums of instruction.

Officials explained that the move was taken purely as a precaution, given the continuous heavy rains in Lonavala and surrounding areas. “The step has been taken to ensure the safety of students,” they said.

Offices reopened on Wednesday, and banks, shops, and other businesses have also resumed normal operations as the metropolis gradually returns to its routine.
