A sanitation worker fell into an open manhole during a civic inspection led by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde on Wednesday, prompting a sharp reaction from the Mayor and raising fresh concerns over safety practices during monsoon-related operations across the city.

The incident happened at Gandhi Market in Sion, one of the areas affected by heavy rain and flooding, where Tawde was reviewing drainage and waterlogging conditions. As municipal workers were clearing waste from a drain, a sanitation worker reportedly lost his balance and fell into an uncovered manhole.

The accident occurred in full view of the Mayor and civic officials accompanying her on the inspection. A video of the incident quickly circulated online, drawing attention to the risks faced by frontline sanitation workers during the monsoon season.

People at the spot rushed to the worker's aid and successfully pulled him out within moments.

Following the incident, Tawde expressed strong displeasure over the safety lapse and questioned officials present at the site. She warned that strict action would be taken against those found responsible for failing to ensure proper safety measures during civic operations.

The Mayor said ward-level officials could face suspension if manholes are left open without adequate safeguards, highlighting the need for greater accountability as Mumbai battles another spell of intense monsoon weather.

The incident comes at a time when several parts of Mumbai are grappling with flooding, traffic disruptions and overflowing drains following persistent rainfall. Civic teams have been deployed across the city to clear stormwater channels and prevent water accumulation in vulnerable areas.
