The city and neighbouring districts witnessed widespread disruption on Monday after relentless rain inundated roads, uprooted trees and led to multiple incidents of wall and billboard collapses, severely affecting normal life

Mumbai: Mumbai woke to overcast skies and strong winds on Tuesday as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) maintained an orange alert for heavy rainfall and gusty winds across the city.
As a precaution, authorities announced that all government, private and civic-run schools and colleges in Mumbai will remain closed on Tuesday.
The city and neighbouring districts witnessed widespread disruption on Monday after relentless rain inundated roads, uprooted trees and led to multiple incidents of wall and billboard collapses, severely affecting normal life.
The IMD's orange alert, the third level in its four-tier weather warning system, indicates the likelihood of severe weather that could result in significant disruptions, transport delays and power outages. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid unnecessary travel.
Meanwhile, traffic on the Mumbai-bound carriageway of the Mumbai–Pune Expressway's Missing Link bypass resumed late on Monday after remaining suspended for more than 18 hours due to a landslide caused by heavy overnight rain.
According to the Maharashtra State Road Development Corporation (MSRDC), the route reopened at 10.10 pm following safety inspections at the affected site. The carriageway had been shut after a landslide struck near the exit of Tunnel 2—the longest tunnel on the Missing Link section cutting through the Sahyadri mountain range—at around 4 am on Monday.
The heavy rain also proved deadly in Pune district, where at least four people lost their lives in rain-related incidents on Monday.
Three members of a family were killed in a landslide in Patan village in Maval tehsil, while another person died in a wall collapse. In a separate incident, two people were swept away by floodwaters, officials said.
Persistent rainfall also triggered multiple landslides across Pune district, prompting authorities to rescue or relocate more than 500 people to safer locations as a precaution. Emergency teams remain on alert as the region continues to experience intense monsoon conditions.
