Mumbai: A stampede-like situation unfolded at Mumbai's Ghatkopar Metro station after a train delay left hundreds of commuters stranded on the platform, triggering panic and renewed concerns about passenger safety.

The videos circulating on social media show a massive crowd packed into the station, struggling to move amid the chaos. Many passengers were seen recording the ordeal on their phones, while others attempted to make their way forward through the dense crowd.

Mumbai Metro officials attributed the disruption to a technical issue that led to the withdrawal of one service on Metro Line 1, causing a backlog of commuters during peak hours. The situation quickly escalated, with one user posting on X (formerly Twitter):

“Crazy commuter woes thanks to 1 service withdrawn… Stampede-like situation in the Ghatkopar station. @Dev_Fadnavis @CMOMaharashtra act fast before lives are lost. Line 1 needs 6-bogie rakes & 3x the current frequency,” along with a video showing the crowd.

The latest incident has brought back focus on Mumbai's overburdened transport infrastructure, coming just weeks after a deadly mishap on June 9 in Thane district. In that incident, four people died and nine were injured after falling off two overcrowded local trains near Mumbra and Diwa stations.
