Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to cut rail travel time to 15-17 hours, offering a faster overnight journey with modern coaches, premium amenities and improved passenger comfort.

Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper Train: A faster overnight rail journey between Mumbai and Bengaluru could soon become a reality, with Indian Railways preparing to introduce the Vande Bharat Sleeper on one of the country's busiest travel corridors. While the official launch date and timetable are yet to be announced, early plans suggest the service could reduce travel time and offer a premium alternative to conventional long-distance trains.
For thousands of business travellers, IT professionals, students and tourists who regularly travel between Maharashtra and Karnataka, the biggest attraction is expected to be the shorter journey. Existing trains on the route typically take close to 22 hours, but the Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to bring that down to around 15-17 hours, depending on the final schedule and stoppage pattern.
The proposed train is expected to operate between Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT) and KSR Bengaluru City Junction. Railway planning discussions indicate that major stops could include Pune, Solapur, Kalaburagi and Hubballi, though the final route has not yet been officially notified.
If introduced as planned, passengers may be able to board in the evening and reach their destination the following morning, making the service a practical option for travellers looking to save both time and hotel costs.
What makes the Vande Bharat Sleeper different?
Unlike the current Vande Bharat trains designed primarily for daytime journeys, the sleeper version has been built specifically for overnight long-distance travel.
The train is expected to feature modern interiors, improved sleeping arrangements and enhanced safety systems aimed at delivering a more comfortable experience than traditional sleeper services.
Key features likely to be available include:
- Ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning
- Fully air-conditioned coaches
- Premium First AC accommodation
- Automatic passenger doors
- Sealed vestibules connecting coaches
- Reduced external noise levels
- Advanced safety and passenger comfort features
The sleeper train has been designed for speeds of up to 180 kmph, making it one of the fastest overnight train platforms developed by Indian Railways.
Coach composition and capacity
According to available project details, the Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper is expected to run with 16 coaches and accommodate more than 800 passengers.
The likely configuration includes:
11 AC Three-Tier coaches
4 AC Two-Tier coaches
1 First AC coach
The total passenger capacity is expected to be around 823 seats and berths.
