Mumbai's suburban railway network is set for a major expansion, with the government advancing production of 238 new AC local train rakes. The first rake is expected in 2027, while the complete fleet is targeted for delivery by 2030, bringing additional capacity and comfort to commuters.
The government had already approved 238 additional AC suburban train rakes for Mumbai. Under the original production schedule, the first rake was expected only in 2030, with the full fleet potentially taking until 2034.

To bring the trains into service earlier, production will now be carried out simultaneously at three Railway manufacturing units.
The first new rake is expected to be ready in 2027, with all 238 rakes targeted to reach Mumbai by 2030.
Three factories to speed up production
The rakes will be manufactured at:
- Integral Coach Factory (ICF), Chennai
- Rail Coach Factory (RCF), Kapurthala
- Modern Coach Factory (MCF), Raebareli
Using three production facilities simultaneously is expected to shorten the manufacturing timeline and allow the trains to be inducted much earlier.
₹22,000 crore Mumbai rail expansion
The faster AC train rollout is being planned alongside a proposed ₹22,000 crore capacity-enhancement programme for Mumbai's suburban railway network.
The wider plan includes new corridors, additional railway lines and platform extensions to accommodate 15-coach trains. Railway yards will also be remodelled to support the expanded network.
The aim is to ensure that additional trains are introduced alongside the infrastructure needed to operate them effectively.
Why the rollout is being accelerated
The earlier procurement timeline could have delayed the first AC rake until 2030 and the complete fleet until 2034.
The government has therefore chosen simultaneous production to bring additional AC capacity to Mumbai sooner and align the trains with upcoming infrastructure upgrades.
MRVC CMD Vilas S Wadekar said the revised approach would align the induction of AC rakes with the commissioning of new corridors, additional lines and other capacity-enhancement projects.
He described Mumbai's suburban railway as the city's “lifeline” and said the accelerated rollout would bring the benefits of AC suburban travel to commuters earlier.

The additional rakes are expected to expand AC local services and increase carrying capacity across Mumbai's suburban network.
Combined with new corridors, additional tracks and longer platforms, the programme is aimed at creating a higher-capacity and more comfortable suburban rail system.
With the first new AC rake targeted for 2027 and the full 238-rake fleet expected by 2030, Mumbai commuters could see a substantial expansion of AC local services over the next few years.
