Mumbai: Two people have died after a landslide occurred in Mumbai's Kurla area early Wednesday morning, with several others feared trapped under the debris. A major rescue operation is underway at the site, with teams from the BMC, police, NDRF and other agencies deployed.

The landslide occurred at Gaushiya Chawl in Chirag Nagar, near Rathod Medical, at around 3:48 am, according to the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). Two bodies have been recovered and sent to the nearest hospital.

Two injured persons have been identified as Sohel Ansari, 18, and Mohamad Ansari, 14, the BMC said.

Officials said the number of people feared trapped is still being assessed. The BMC said 6-8 people are likely to be trapped, while Maharashtra DCP Ganesh Shinde said around 4-5 people may be trapped. Local reports from the site put the number of suspected trapped persons at three to four.

DCP Ganesh Shinde said the landslide occurred due to the rain in the Ashoknagar area under the jurisdiction of the Ghatkopar police.

Police personnel have been deployed at the spot along with rescue teams from the BMC, National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), 108 Ambulance services and ward staff.

The rescue operation is continuing and further details are awaited.
