Gurugram: A 45-year-old man died at Delhi's Safdarjung Hospital early on Sunday after being severely beaten by a group of people who suspected him of being involved in cattle smuggling, police said.

The victim, identified as Yusuf, was a resident of Ghudpur village in Haryana's Palwal district.

Police have filed an FIR at the Mundkati police station based on a complaint from Yusuf’s family, who allege that members of a 'gau rakshak' group were responsible for the attack. The group is known for taking action against cattle smuggling, often using violent methods.

Details of attack

According to police, Yusuf was a cattle rearer and ran a milk business. He owned around 30 animals. On Friday evening, he purchased a milch animal and its calf from Nagla village and was transporting them in a tempo, following his bike. When they reached Mitrol village, some individuals stopped the tempo, accusing the driver of smuggling the animal.

When the driver denied the accusation, the attackers tricked him into calling Yusuf to the scene. Once Yusuf arrived, he was beaten severely. He was rushed to the hospital but succumbed to his injuries during treatment.

Family's reaction, demand for help

Yusuf’s family, who describe him as a man with no known disputes, buried his body late on Sunday after the FIR was registered. They are calling on the government to provide financial assistance to support them. Yusuf leaves behind four children.

Despite repeated attempts, Palwal Superintendent of Police Chander Mohan could not be reached for comment.
