The Detective Branch of Bangladesh Police has arrested another prime accused in the lynching of Hindu youth Dipu Chandra Das in Mymensingh.
The arrested person has been identified as 25-year-old Md Yasin Arafat, a resident of South Hobirbari’s Karaitola Mor. He was detained from the Sarulia area under the Demra Police Station in Dhaka with the assistance of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police, officials said.
Dipu, a garment factory worker, was brutally attacked and lynched by a mob on December 18, 2025, following allegations of blasphemy. He was beaten to death, and his body was later hanged and set on fire. However, investigators have clarified that they found no evidence that Dipu had posted anything on Facebook that could hurt religious sentiments, contradicting the claims made by those involved in the attack.
According to the police, Yasin Arafat played a leading role in the incident. He allegedly led a section of the mob at the factory gate, raised slogans to incite violence, took part in the assault, and later helped drag Dipu’s body with a rope before it was burned. After the murder, Arafat reportedly went into hiding for nearly two weeks and is believed to have stayed at several madrasas in Dhaka. In an attempt to conceal his identity, he even joined Sufa Madrasa as a teacher, investigators said.
So far, police have arrested 21 people in connection with the case. Among them, three witnesses have recorded statements before the court, and nine accused have given confessional statements. Eighteen accused are already in jail custody, and the process to seek further remand is underway. The Detective Branch has said operations are continuing to trace and arrest the remaining absconding suspects. Authorities have described the murder as one of the most brutal killings reported from an industrial zone in recent times.
