New Delhi: Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Monday took oath as a member of the Rajya Sabha following his re-election to Parliament's Upper House from Karnataka.

The oath was administered by Rajya Sabha Chairman and Vice President C P Radhakrishnan in his chamber. Kharge took the oath in Hindi.

Senior Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi and Priyanka Gandhi Vadra attended the oath-taking ceremony. Also present were Leader of the House and Union Health Minister J P Nadda, Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju, Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal and Rajya Sabha Deputy Chairman Harivansh.

After administering the oath, Radhakrishnan congratulated Kharge and said the Rajya Sabha would benefit from his long parliamentary experience.

Kharge was among four candidates declared elected unopposed to the Rajya Sabha from Karnataka on June 11. The Congress secured three of the four seats, while the BJP won one.

The elections were held after the terms of sitting members Mallikarjun Kharge, BJP leaders Iranna Kadadi and Narayana Koragappa, and former Prime Minister H D Deve Gowda ended on June 25.

Kharge's re-election ensures his continued presence in Parliament's Upper House, where he represents Karnataka and serves as one of the Congress party's senior-most leaders.
