According to weather officials, the city may begin the day with sunshine, but cloud cover is expected to increase gradually as the day progresses. Thunderstorm activity along with light rainfall is likely in some areas, particularly during the afternoon and evening hours.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a yellow alert for Kolkata for May 28 and May 29, warning residents about thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds.
Authorities have said weather conditions are expected to remain unstable as moisture-laden winds continue to influence the region.
Meteorologist HR Biswas, head of the Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata, said current atmospheric conditions indicate nearly a 30 per cent chance of rainfall on Wednesday, while the possibility is expected to rise significantly to around 80 per cent by Thursday.
He noted that the expected thunderstorm activity could help lower both temperatures and humidity levels.
Despite the possibility of rain, humid conditions may continue to affect residents for now.
Temperature levels are expected to remain slightly above seasonal averages, with high moisture content in the atmosphere adding to discomfort.
Weather experts attributed the sticky conditions to the continuous inflow of moisture from the Bay of Bengal.
The weather department has also warned that Kolkata and nearby districts could witness winds reaching speeds of around 40 to 50 kmph during thunderstorm activity.
While no heavy rainfall warning has been issued so far, short spells of light to moderate rain accompanied by gusty winds cannot be ruled out.
The changing weather may also affect movement during evening rush hours, with temporary traffic disruptions possible if thunderstorms develop over the city.
Officials have advised residents, especially children and elderly people, to remain cautious, stay hydrated, and avoid prolonged exposure to direct sunlight or open spaces during thunderstorm activity.
Weather patterns over the next few days are expected to remain similar, with intermittent cloud cover and chances of rain continuing across Kolkata and parts of south Bengal.
