Ranchi: Parts of Jharkhand are expected to see heavy to very heavy rainfall starting Thursday night due to the influence of cyclonic storm Dana, according to a meteorological department official.

An 'orange' alert has been issued for the Kolhan region, which includes West Singhbhum, Seraikela-Kharsawan, and East Singhbhum districts, for Friday. This alert indicates anticipated rainfall between 115 mm to 204 mm within 24 hours. "Apart from heavy rain, the region might also experience thunderstorms and gusty winds with speeds of up to 60 kmph," Ranchi Meteorological Centre in-charge Abhishek Anand said.

The storm is projected to make landfall between Bhitarkanika National Park and Dhamra Port in Odisha early Friday, bringing wind speeds of up to 120 kilometres per hour, as reported by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD).

As of 2:30 am, the storm was located about 280 kilometres southeast of Paradip in Odisha and 370 kilometres south-southeast of Sagar Island in West Bengal.

NDRF teams deployed for emergencies

In response to the potential impact, six teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) have been deployed in Jamshedpur and Chaibasa, with two additional teams on standby in Ranchi to address any emergencies.

Several central Jharkhand areas, including Ranchi, Khunti, Lohardaga, Gumla, and Ramgarh, may also experience heavy rainfall on Friday. "Light to moderate rainfall is likely in many parts of the state on Thursday, with forecast of heavy rainfall in the Kolhan division, under the influence of the cyclonic system," Anand said.

The adverse weather conditions could affect ongoing political activities related to the upcoming assembly elections in Jharkhand, which are set to take place in two phases on November 13 and November 20, with vote counting scheduled for November 23. The nomination process for the first phase began on October 18 and will end on October 25, while nominations for the second phase started on October 22 and will run until October 29.
