The Western Disturbance is expected to bring widespread precipitation across the Union Territory, significantly affecting both travel and daily life

Srinagar: Jammu and Kashmir is bracing for widespread rain and snowfall as an active Western Disturbance approaches the region, the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned.
The system is expected to remain active from Sunday evening through Tuesday (October 7), bringing heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning, hailstorms, and gusty winds to many areas.
Director of the Meteorological Centre, Srinagar, Mukhtar Ahmad, said moderate to heavy snowfall is likely over higher reaches, while plains in the Jammu division may experience heavy rain. The heaviest precipitation is forecast between Sunday evening and Tuesday afternoon.
Following the IMD warning, Chief Minister Omar Abdullah instructed all departments to remain on high alert. As a precautionary measure, the Directorate of School Education in Jammu has ordered the closure of all government and private schools on October 6 and 7 to ensure student safety.
Recent floods and cloudbursts in the region have already caused 155 deaths and significant property damage, prompting heightened vigilance from the Disaster Management, Relief, Rehabilitation and Reconstruction Department. Officials in Srinagar, Pulwama and other districts have also urged residents to stay indoors and avoid hilly terrain or water bodies.
Heavy snowfall is expected in hilly areas such as Pahalgam, Sinthan Pass (Kokernag), Pir Ki Gali (Shopian), Zojila (Sonmarg), Razdan Pass (Bandipora), Gulmarg, and Sadhna Pass (Kupwara). Authorities have warned that major highways connecting these areas could face temporary closures due to snow accumulation.
