Ramesh alleged that the delay was linked to the Union Home Minister's attempts to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha to pass what he described as the Modi government's "dangerous Bills on Delimitation"

New Delhi: Congress general secretary and MP Jairam Ramesh has criticised the Centre over the delay in proroguing the Monsoon Session of Parliament, alleging that the government's efforts to secure the numbers needed to pass its proposed delimitation Bills have failed.
In a post on X, Ramesh pointed out that 60 days had passed since both Houses were adjourned sine die on August 13, 2026, without the session being formally prorogued. He said the delay had surpassed the previous record of 28 days, recorded after the Monsoon Session in 2015.
Ramesh alleged that the delay was linked to the Union Home Minister's attempts to secure a two-thirds majority in the Lok Sabha to pass what he described as the Modi government's "dangerous Bills on Delimitation".
He also claimed that several allies of the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had opposed the proposed legislation and that the ruling coalition was facing internal differences. Referring to the controversy he called 'GyaneshGate', the Congress leader said the Opposition's unity had played a decisive role in defeating the government's proposals in the Lok Sabha on April 17, 2026.
Despite what he alleged were attempts by the Home Minister to split opposition parties, Ramesh maintained that the Opposition's unity remained intact.
The Congress leader called on the Centre to prorogue both Houses of Parliament and initiate an all-party dialogue on delimitation, saying opposition leaders had repeatedly demanded consultations on the issue.
He also called for the resignation of the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC), the suspension of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls, and measures to restore public confidence in the electoral system.
Alleging that the electoral system had been seriously undermined, Ramesh questioned whether those responsible would take steps to address the concerns. He concluded by expressing confidence that the Constitution would prevail and that the resolve of the people would overcome the challenges facing the country.
