A video showing an IndiGo plane struggling to land in Chennai during Cyclone Fengal’s impact has gone viral. The footage shows the plane attempting to land amid heavy turbulence, with strong winds and rain from the cyclone affecting the city on November 30, 2024.
In the video, the plane is seen tilting sharply to the left just before it aborts the landing, flying away a few feet above the runway. The pilots carried out a go-around, a procedure used when it is unsafe to land.
IndiGo confirmed the incident, explaining that the flight from Mumbai to Chennai faced severe weather conditions, including gusty winds and heavy rain, prompting the go-around. The airline clarified that such maneuvers are routine and part of established safety protocols.
“Due to adverse weather, including rain and strong winds (which later led to the closure of Chennai airport), the cockpit crew of flight 6E 683 executed a go-around in accordance with safety protocols,” said an IndiGo spokesperson.
The airline reassured passengers, noting that pilots are trained to handle such situations with professionalism.
“A go-around is a standard procedure when a safe landing cannot be made,” the statement added.
The flight successfully landed in Chennai around 12:40 pm, shortly before the airport halted operations due to the cyclone.
Cyclone Fengal made landfall that night, causing heavy rainfall and strong winds in northern Tamil Nadu and Puducherry. In Chennai, at least four people were killed in rain-related incidents, and parts of the city were left waterlogged.
