Puducherry: The Puducherry government has declared the regions of Puducherry, Yanam, and Karaikal as "natural calamity-affected areas" following the devastation caused by Cyclone Fengal.  

The announcement was made by Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K Kailashnathan on December 5. According to the official notification issued by the Department of Revenue and Disaster Management, this status will remain in effect until June 2025.  

The order stated, "The Puducherry, Yanam, and Karaikal regions of the Union Territory of Puducherry are hereby declared as natural calamity-affected areas for the Fasli Year 1434, from July 1, 2024, to June 30, 2025, due to the devastating damages caused by Cyclone Fengal during November and December 2024."  

Relief measures announced  

The Puducherry government has announced relief assistance to support those affected by the cyclone:  

  • Rs 5,000 for all ration cardholders impacted by the cyclone.  
  • Rs 30,000 per hectare for farmers whose crops were damaged. Around 10,000 hectares of crops in Puducherry were destroyed.  
  • Rs 10,000 for repairs of boats damaged during the floods. Around 50 boats were reported damaged.  

Chief Minister N Rangaswamy explained the government's actions: "Cyclone Fengal brought 48 percent more rainfall than expected, causing extensive damage. We aim to support affected families and farmers through these relief packages."  

Cyclone Fengal’s impact  

Cyclone Fengal struck the coasts of Puducherry and Tamil Nadu on November 30, bringing heavy rainfall and strong winds. It remained stationary for six hours near Puducherry, about 30 kilometres north of Cuddalore and 40 kilometres east of Viluppuram.  

The cyclone left behind widespread destruction, including flooding, crop loss, and damage to property, prompting the government to take urgent measures for recovery.
