The government urged an immediate end to hostilities and stressed the need for peace, diplomacy and safe maritime navigation in the region
New Delhi: India has described the recent attack on the United Arab Emirates port city of Fujairah as “unacceptable” and has called for an immediate cessation of hostilities.
The statement comes after three Indian nationals were injured in the incident.
Fujairah’s oil industry zone is a strategically important energy hub, enabling the UAE to export oil through the Gulf of Oman and bypass the Strait of Hormuz.
MEA issues strong statement on violence
In its official response, the Ministry of External Affairs said, “The attack on Fujairah that resulted in injury to three Indian nationals is unacceptable. We call for immediate cessation of these hostilities and the targeting of civilian infrastructure and innocent civilians.”
The statement further added, “India continues to stand for dialogue and diplomacy to deal with the situation, so that peace and stability may be restored across West Asia. We also call for free and unimpeded navigation and commerce through the Strait of Hormuz in keeping with international law. India stands ready to support all efforts for a peaceful resolution of issues.”
Indian Embassy monitoring situation
India’s Embassy in Abu Dhabi had earlier confirmed the incident, stating: “We are in touch with local authorities for ensuring adequate medical care and welfare of the affected Indian nationals.”
Broader wave of strikes reported
The attack on Fujairah was part of a wider wave of Iranian strikes targeting the UAE.
The UAE Ministry of Defence said its air defence systems intercepted 12 ballistic missiles, three cruise missiles and four unmanned aerial vehicles launched from Iran on Monday. The strike marked the end of a nearly month-long pause in Iranian attacks on the UAE since the April 8 ceasefire.
Strategic importance and Indian community impact
The UAE hosts around 3.5 million Indians, making it the largest expatriate community in the country. The Strait of Hormuz also remains a critical route for India’s energy imports, underlining the strategic importance of stability in the region.
