Iranian media reported the blasts near the strategically important island, with the Fars news agency saying its correspondent heard explosions but saw no visible smoke.

Meanwhile, SNN news agency claimed that an Iranian tanker had been targeted by the United States near Kharg Island. There was no immediate confirmation or comment from either US or Iranian officials.

The reported explosions come days after fighting between the two countries resumed last Sunday, with US attacks on Iran marking a new escalation in a conflict that has now stretched beyond six months.

Iran responded with retaliatory attacks on US targets across the Middle East. On Thursday, Tehran said its armed forces had struck US military bases in Kuwait and the United Arab Emirates, saying the attacks were in retaliation for civilian deaths at a wedding that Iran blamed on Washington.
