India on Sunday condemned the attack on the commercial vessel 'GFS Galaxy' off the coast of Oman, calling the repeated attacks on commercial shipping in the region ‘deeply worrisome.’

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that 10 Indian nationals on board have been rescued, while one person remains missing.

The MEA said the Indian Embassy in Oman is closely coordinating with Omani authorities, the vessel's management and other stakeholders as search and rescue operations continue. It also thanked Oman for its support in the ongoing efforts.

In a statement, the ministry called for an immediate de-escalation of tensions in the region and urged all sides to pursue a diplomatic solution to restore peace and stability.

It also stressed that attacks on commercial shipping and civilian infrastructure must stop, and that free and unhindered navigation through international waterways should be restored in accordance with international law.

Earlier, the US Central Command alleged that the Cyprus-flagged container ship was attacked by Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) while transiting the Strait of Hormuz.

According to the US military, the vessel suffered significant engine room damage and an onboard fire, leaving it unable to continue its voyage. One civilian crew member is reportedly missing.

The attack comes amid heightened tensions around the Strait of Hormuz, one of the world's most strategically important maritime routes through which nearly one-fifth of global oil trade passes.
