Chennai: A controversy erupted after a video of IIT-Madras Director Veezhinathan Kamakoti praising cow urine for its purported medicinal benefits went viral. In the clip, Kamakoti described cow urine as possessing "amazing medicinal values," sparking sharp criticism from political leaders.
Speaking at a public event, Kamakoti shared an anecdote: “There was a saint who had a fever. I don’t recall his name, but he asked for cow urine, drank it, and recovered within 15 minutes. Cow urine is antibacterial, antifungal, and beneficial for digestion and stomach issues. Its medicinal value should be acknowledged.”
The remarks drew a strong response from the DMK, with leader T.K.S. Elangovan labelling them “nonsense” and calling for Kamakoti’s removal from the education system.
Congress leader Karti P. Chidambaram also condemned the comments, tweeting, “Peddling pseudoscience by @iitmadras Director is most unbecoming @IMAIndiaOrg.”
