Mumbai: A 21-year-old student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Bombay died after allegedly jumping from the terrace of his hostel in the early hours of Wednesday, police have confirmed.

Student suicides have increased across IIT campuses nationwide over the past three years, according to a report published in January.

The incident took place at around 1 am at Hostel No. 4 in the Powai area of Mumbai. The student, identified as Naman Agarwal, was in his second year of engineering studies. He was originally from Pilani in Rajasthan.

Police have registered an Accidental Death Report (ADR) and launched an investigation into the matter.

A similar incident was reported on December 29 when a final-year BTech student of the Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) Kanpur was found dead in his hostel room, triggering shock across the campus.
