7 dead in helicopter crash near Kedarnath; 5th such incident in 6 weeks

Uttarakhand: In a tragic incident early Sunday morning, an Aryan Aviation helicopter carrying seven people, including six pilgrims and a pilot, crashed in the dense forest between Gaurikund and Sonprayag in Uttarakhand’s Rudraprayag district. All on board were killed, marking the fifth aviation-related incident in the Kedarnath region in just six weeks.
The chopper was en route to Guptkashi from Shri Kedarnath Dham, one of the holiest Hindu pilgrimage sites in the Himalayas, when it went down around 5:20 am. According to the Uttarakhand Civil Aviation Development Authority (UCADA), the deceased included five adult pilgrims, one child, and the pilot. The passengers hailed from Uttarakhand, Uttar Pradesh, Maharashtra, and Gujarat.
Locals discover crash site
Initial reports suggest that technical failure and poor weather conditions may have contributed to the crash. The alarm was raised after locals, who were out collecting fodder for cattle, discovered the wreckage in the forested terrain.
Rescue operations are being carried out by teams from the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) and State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), who were dispatched promptly. Access to the site has been challenging due to the remote location and terrain.
Chief Minister responds
Uttarakhand Chief Minister Pushkar Singh Dhami expressed deep sorrow over the incident, posting on X (formerly Twitter):
“The extremely distressing news of a helicopter crash in Rudraprayag district has been received. SDRF, local administration, and other rescue teams are engaged in relief and rescue operations. I pray to Baba Kedar for the safety of all the travellers.”
Ongoing safety concerns
This is the fifth helicopter-related incident in the Kedarnath pilgrimage zone since the temple's portals opened for the annual Char Dham Yatra on May 2.
On June 7, another helicopter faced a near-catastrophe when it developed a technical snag shortly after take-off, forcing the pilot to execute an emergency landing on a highway near Kedarnath. The aircraft came dangerously close to residential buildings and clipped a parked vehicle with its tail rotor. Fortunately, the five pilgrims on board were unharmed, though the pilot sustained minor injuries.
Earlier this season, other incidents involved emergency landings and mechanical failures, raising concerns about the safety standards of private helicopter operators servicing the Char Dham route.
The Directorate General of Civil Aviation (DGCA) is expected to launch a full investigation into this latest fatal crash. Aviation experts have repeatedly highlighted the risks of flying in the Himalayan region, where sudden weather changes, narrow valleys, and altitude fluctuations pose unique challenges for pilots.
As the Char Dham Yatra continues to attract thousands of pilgrims daily, officials are facing growing scrutiny over helicopter safety protocols, aircraft maintenance standards, and the readiness of operators to deal with emergency scenarios.
Further details about the victims and the cause of the crash are awaited as rescue and recovery operations proceed.
