Chennai: The Regional Meteorological Centre (RMC) has announced that six districts in Tamil Nadu will experience heavy rainfall on Friday. While Chennai is expected to see lighter rains, some areas may still face isolated showers and thunderstorms. The state capital and nearby regions are likely to be partly cloudy.
The districts anticipating heavy rainfall include Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, and Erode. A weather depression in the Bay of Bengal moved west-northwest and crossed the north Tamil Nadu-south Andhra Pradesh coast between Puducherry and Nellore on Thursday morning. This system is expected to weaken into a low-pressure area soon.

On October 20 and 21, heavy rains are also predicted in the ghat areas of Coimbatore and Tirupur, as well as in the districts of Ranipet, Vellore, Tirupattur, Krishnagiri, Dharmapuri, Salem, Tiruchi, Dindigul, Madurai, Pudukottai, Ariyalur, and Perambalur.
A flood alert has been issued for Dharmapuri, Krishnagiri, and Tiruvannamalai districts, where the Thenpennai River flows. Local authorities have raised this alert due to heavy rains in the areas surrounding the Krishnagiri Reservoir Project (KRP) dam, which has resulted in the release of 2,000 cusecs of water. Flood warnings have also been issued for Harur and Pappireddipatti.
Fire and Rescue Services, along with the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF), are ready to assist as the continuous rain has increased water levels at the KRP dam considerably.
