Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh: India marked another significant milestone in space technology late on Friday night when the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) successfully launched the GSLV-F18 rocket carrying the NVS-03 navigation satellite. Lifting off at 11:51 pm from the Second Launch Pad at the Satish Dhawan Space Centre (SDSC-SHAR) in Sriharikota, Andhra Pradesh, the rocket soared into the night sky and successfully injected the satellite into orbit. Immediately after orbital injection was confirmed and the mission declared accomplished, joyful scenes unfolded in the control room as ISRO scientists congratulated one another.

Space agency delivers NVS-03 into targeted orbit

This mission was the 20th flight of India’s Geosynchronous Satellite Launch Vehicle (GSLV). During the flight, the GSLV-F18 launch vehicle placed the NVS-03 spacecraft into a Geosynchronous Transfer Orbit. Reaching this specific transfer orbit allows the satellite to smoothly transition into its intended operational position above the Earth.

How NVS-03 boosts satellite navigation for India

The NVS-03 satellite is the third spacecraft in India's next-generation navigation satellite system. It has been deployed to maintain uninterrupted continuity of positioning and timing services for the Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System (IRNSS) series. Reliable satellite navigation plays a crucial everyday role in location tracking, transport management, and civil aviation across the country.

Indigenous atomic clocks and wider signal coverage

To achieve high precision, NVS-03 carries a home-grown Indian atomic clock alongside procured atomic clocks. Precise timekeeping is vital because even a tiny fraction of a second's variation can alter location calculations. In addition to existing L5 and S frequency signals, the satellite introduces the L1 signal. This signal structure provides coverage across the Indian landmass and extends over a region reaching 1,500 km beyond India's geopolitical boundaries.

National leaders hail milestone as a moment of pride

Celebrating the successful launch, Union Minister of State for Science and Technology, Jitendra Singh, congratulated Team ISRO in a message posted on X. "This remarkable achievement reflects India's growing prowess in Space technology and our unwavering commitment to strengthening sovereign indigenous navigation capabilities," he stated. The minister noted that space reforms announced by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in recent years vindicate the dreams of founding fathers Vikram Sarabhai and Satish Dhawan, calling the event "the celebration of another proud moment for India".
