Kolkata: The trial in the rape and murder case of a junior doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in West Bengal is set to begin on Monday at a special court. The case involves the brutal death of the woman, whose body was found in a seminar hall on the hospital premises on August 9. The trial will be conducted on a fast-track and daily basis.

Charges against Sanjay Roy

The charges against the prime accused, Sanjay Roy, a civic volunteer, were formally framed on November 4. He is the sole person accused in the crime, which has shocked the local community. The CBI filed its first charge sheet 35 days prior to the start of the trial, naming Roy as the "sole prime accused" in both the rape and murder.

Supreme Court and political demands

There has been ongoing controversy surrounding the trial's location. Recently, during a hearing in the Supreme Court related to the case, there was a request to move the trial to a court outside West Bengal. However, the plea was rejected by Chief Justice D.Y. Chandrachud. On Saturday, Leader of the Opposition in the West Bengal Assembly, Suvendu Adhikari, also called for the trial to be moved outside the state, claiming that justice would not be served while Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee remained in power.

Accused denies involvement

Sanjay Roy has denied all allegations, stating that he did not commit the rape or murder. He claims he is being falsely implicated by the government and has pointed fingers at the Kolkata Police, where he was employed as a civic volunteer. Roy also alleged that he was threatened by his colleagues in the police department to stay silent on the matter.

The trial, set to begin 94 days after the woman's body was found, has attracted significant attention as the investigation continues to unfold.
