Kolkata: Junior doctors in West Bengal, protesting the rape and murder of a fellow doctor from R.G. Kar Medical College and Hospital in Kolkata, are concerned that Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of the college, might avoid punishment due to what they see as a flawed investigation by the CBI.

The West Bengal Junior Doctor’s Front (WBJDF), which is leading the protests, held a torch rally to the CBI office on Wednesday evening. Thousands from various backgrounds joined to urge the agency to resolve the case quickly and fairly.

Debasis Halder, a spokesperson for WBJDF, criticised the CBI's investigation, pointing out that its initial charge sheet named only a civic volunteer as the main suspect, overlooking others involved. “The lopsided investigation by CBI has kept us as well as the victim’s parents worried that Sandip Ghosh might finally escape punishment at least in the rape and murder case,” said Halder at the end of the torch rally and protest demonstrations in front of CBI office on Wednesday night.

The CBI is investigating two separate cases against Ghosh: one for financial misconduct at R.G. Kar and another for his alleged role in the rape and murder case.

In the latter case, Ghosh and Abhijit Mondal, the former officer in charge of the local police station, are accused of obstructing the investigation and tampering with evidence. The Kolkata Police initially handled the case before it was transferred to the CBI by the Calcutta High Court.
