Central Railway (CR) is planning a prolonged mega block around January 25–26 to enable the demolition of the Elphinstone Road Overbridge (ROB) between Parel and Prabhadevi stations — a critical step to clear the alignment for the upcoming Sewri–Worli Elevated Connector, an important east–west link connecting the Mumbai Trans Harbour Link to the western seafront.

Key Details:

  • The mega block is likely to be scheduled overnight from January 25 into January 26, taking advantage of the Republic Day long weekend when suburban commuter volumes are expected to be relatively lower.
  • Railway planners, in coordination with the Maharashtra Rail Infrastructure Development Corporation (MRIDC), have considered several block scenarios, with the main demolition window pegged at about 13–15 hours. This will be supported by shorter blocks before and after for preparatory and finishing work.
  • The demolition operation will focus on removing the remaining 132-metre steel section of the century-old bridge that spans active Central and Western Railway tracks. Approach ramps and adjoining structures have already been dismantled in earlier phases.
  • Heavy-duty cranes and specialised cutting equipment will be deployed to remove the girders in segments, with railway authorities coordinating overhead equipment adjustments and implementing safety protocols to protect train operations during the block.

Impact on Rail Services

The mega block is expected to affect suburban services on CR’s Main Line and Harbour Line, and may also necessitate service diversions or short-terminations for select long-distance trains. Detailed operating plans and service advisories are expected closer to the date.

Project Significance

The removal of the Elphinstone Road ROB will enable progress on a wider double-decker replacement integrated with the Sewri–Worli Elevated Connector, aimed at easing long-standing congestion in the Parel–Worli corridor.

The Sewri–Worli Elevated Connector is a key missing link in Mumbai’s road network, intended to provide seamless east–west connectivity and facilitate smoother movement from the Trans Harbour Link to the western seafront.

Officials have said that the Republic Day weekend offers the most suitable window to complete this crucial demolition phase while minimising disruption to commuters.
