Delhi is expected to get relief from intense heat as the IMD issues a yellow alert predicting light rain and thunderstorms tonight.

New Delhi: Delhi is expected to get relief from intense heat as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a “yellow alert” predicting light rain and thunderstorms in the city on Monday night.
After several days of heatwave conditions, weather patterns are showing a gradual shift, with rain and gusty winds likely across several parts of the national capital.
According to the IMD, very light to light rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning is likely over multiple areas of Delhi, including South East Delhi, East Delhi, Shahdara, Central Delhi, North East Delhi, South Delhi, New Delhi, South West Delhi, West Delhi, North West Delhi and North Delhi. Wind speeds may reach 30–50 kmph, gusting up to 60 kmph during storm activity.
Earlier in the day, Delhi remained under a yellow alert for heatwave conditions, with temperatures hovering between 43°C and 45°C. However, the weather department has indicated that conditions are expected to change gradually from Monday night, bringing much-needed relief.
The IMD has also forecast a dip in maximum temperatures over the next few days. On Tuesday, temperatures are likely to fall to 40–42°C, and further decline to 39–41°C by Wednesday, accompanied by overcast skies and intermittent rainfall.
Officials have stated that cloud cover may persist until April 30, which could help keep temperatures closer to 37°C in parts of the city.
In a broader outlook, the IMD has predicted isolated to scattered rainfall activity with thunderstorms and gusty winds over Punjab, Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi between April 27 and April 30, with similar conditions expected again in early May.
Despite the local relief expected in Delhi, large parts of India continue to experience high daytime temperatures ranging between 40°C and 46°C, except for the western Himalayan region and parts of the Northeast, where conditions remain comparatively milder.
