New Delhi: Delhi experienced a dramatic weather shift on April 30, as thunderstorms, rain, and hailstorms hit parts of the city, ending weeks of intense heatwave conditions.

The national capital had been reeling under severe heat, with temperatures reaching as high as 45°C in several areas. The sudden rain brought a sharp drop in temperature, easing conditions for residents who had been struggling with scorching heat.

Along with rainfall, several areas witnessed hailstorms and strong winds. Wind speeds were reported between 30–40 kmph, with gusts reaching up to 50 kmph, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).

The unusual weather change led to dramatic visuals being shared widely on social media, showing hail and heavy rain hitting different parts of the city.

Temperature drop and IMD alert

Following the rainfall, Delhi’s temperature dropped to around 39°C, while minimum temperatures settled near 25°C.

The IMD issued a yellow alert for the city, warning of thunderstorms and gusty winds during the day.

According to forecasts, the rain is expected to be short-lived. Clear skies are likely to return temporarily, with temperatures again approaching 40°C.

However, another western disturbance is expected around May 3, which may bring fresh spells of rain and thunderstorms lasting till May 5.

Experts suggest that while Delhi may see brief relief periods, heatwave-like conditions are not fully over. Intermittent rain and storm activity are likely to continue as weather systems shift over North India.
