A woman died on Tuesday morning after she fell into a drain when an iron bridge collapsed in north Delhi’s Roop Nagar, triggering panic and a large-scale rescue operation in the area.

According to initial reports, the woman was crossing the bridge when it suddenly gave way, causing her to plunge into the drain. She could not be rescued in time and was declared dead.

Rescue teams from the Boat Club are currently scanning the drain to check if more people may have fallen in after the collapse. Authorities are also assessing the structural damage and the cause behind the incident.

The tragedy comes amid growing concerns over civic negligence in the national capital. In a similar incident earlier this year, 25-year-old bank telecaller Kamal Dhyani died in west Delhi’s Janakpuri in the early hours of February 5 after reportedly falling into a 4–5 metre-deep open pit on a poorly lit road.

The pit had been dug as part of a Delhi Jal Board (DJB) project and was allegedly left uncovered without proper safety measures. Following the incident, Delhi Police arrested a contractor linked to the project.

The back-to-back incidents have intensified questions over safety standards, accountability, and monitoring of infrastructure work across Delhi.
