Delhi’s air quality slipped into the ‘poor’ category with an AQI of 208 on May 19, prompting the Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) to activate Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan across the NCR.

The Commission for Air Quality Management (CAQM) on Tuesday activated Stage I of the Graded Response Action Plan (GRAP) across the National Capital Region after Delhi’s air quality declined to the “poor” category.
The city’s Air Quality Index (AQI) stood at 208 on 19 May, according to official data. Forecasts by the India Meteorological Department (IMD) and the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology (IITM) indicate that pollution levels are expected to hover in the same range over the next few days.
In a formal release, the CAQM said, "The AQI of Delhi has shown increasing trend and recorded as 208 ('Poor' Category) today i.e. on 19.05.2026. Further, the forecast by IMD/ IITM indicates AQI to remain in 'Poor' category in coming days."
Stage I measures activated
The CAQM has directed authorities across Delhi-NCR to roll out all actions prescribed under GRAP Stage I with immediate effect. Agencies have also been instructed to step up enforcement, intensify anti-pollution drives and keep strict watch on emission sources to prevent further deterioration.
The commission said the measures will be closely monitored and adjusted as needed depending on air quality trends.
Citizens asked to follow advisory
Officials have urged residents to adhere to the GRAP Stage I citizen charter, which includes guidelines on reducing personal exposure and minimising pollution-causing activities.
The CAQM said the implementation of these measures is aimed at preventing the air quality from slipping into more severe categories, which would trigger stricter restrictions under subsequent GRAP stages.
