Mumbai: Torrential rains lashed Mumbai overnight, triggering a deadly landslide in the city’s eastern suburb of Vikhroli, killing two members of a family and injuring two others early Saturday, civic officials confirmed.

The incident occurred around 2.39 am at Varsha Nagar in Vikhroli Parksite when soil and stones from a nearby hillock collapsed onto a hut. Four members of the Mishra family were trapped. They were rushed to Rajawadi Hospital, where doctors declared Shalu Mishra (19) and Suresh Mishra (50) dead. Aarti Mishra (45) and Ruturaj Mishra (20) are under treatment and reported to be stable.

Emergency response teams, including fire brigade personnel, police, and BMC staff, immediately rushed to the spot and later evacuated other residents from the area to safer locations.

Meanwhile, Mumbai reeled under widespread waterlogging and traffic chaos as the downpour flooded major arterial roads, stranded vehicles on the Western Express Highway, and forced authorities to shut the Andheri subway. Heavy water accumulation was reported in Sion, Kurla, Chembur, and Andheri.

Flight operations at Mumbai airport were hit, with airlines such as IndiGo issuing advisories urging passengers to check flight status before travel.

According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), Vikhroli recorded 248.5 mm of rainfall in 21 hours ending 5:30 a.m. Saturday, while Santacruz and Sion logged 232.5 mm and 221 mm, respectively. Between 11 pm Friday and 5 am Saturday alone, parts of the city, including Marol and Worli, recorded over 200 mm of rain.

The IMD has upgraded its warning to ‘red alert’ for Mumbai and Raigad district, predicting extremely heavy rainfall at isolated places in the next few hours. Residents have been advised to remain cautious and avoid waterlogged areas.
