A horrific road accident on National Highway 12 in West Bengal’s Nadia district left a couple and their child dead after a 16-wheeler truck ran over them on Tuesday.

The gruesome crash took place on the Churni Bridge stretch near Ranaghat, once again exposing the deadly conditions on the busy highway.

According to police and local sources, the family was travelling on a motorcycle across the bridge when the rider suddenly lost control. The bike skidded and overturned in the middle of the highway, throwing all three onto the road.

Within seconds, a speeding 16-wheeler truck coming from behind ploughed into them.

Eyewitnesses said the massive wheels of the truck crushed the husband and wife on the spot, leaving the highway stained with blood and triggering panic among commuters.

Their child, critically injured in the impact, was rushed to Ranaghat Sub-Divisional Hospital along with the parents, but died on the way.

Locals were the first to rush to the scene before informing the police. Officers later recovered the mangled motorcycle and detained the truck involved in the crash.

The identities of the victims were yet to be officially released at the time of reporting.

The latest tragedy comes barely 24 hours after another deadly accident on the same NH-12 stretch in Nadia’s Fulia area.

On Monday night, a dumper rammed into a vehicle carrying pilgrims returning from Bardhaman’s Jamalpur Shiva Temple. Three pilgrims were killed while at least 15 others suffered serious injuries.

The back-to-back fatal crashes have sparked outrage among locals, with many calling NH-12 a “death corridor” and demanding stricter traffic control, speed checks and better highway surveillance.
