The controversial Instagram account, now under investigation, had shared video clips mostly shot on Church Street, one of Bengaluru’s busiest pedestrian zones

Bengaluru: A 26-year-old man, Gurdeep Singh, has been arrested for allegedly running an Instagram account that posted videos and photographs of unsuspecting women in Bengaluru, sparking widespread outrage after one of the victims spoke out on social media.
Singh, a hotel management graduate currently unemployed, was apprehended by Bengaluru police at his residence in KR Puram on Thursday. Living with his brother, Singh is now in police custody after officers took up the case suo moto, following mounting public pressure.
The controversial Instagram account, now under investigation, had shared video clips mostly shot on Church Street, one of Bengaluru’s busiest pedestrian zones. Many of the videos showed women visibly startled or unaware as the camera lingered on them. In some clips, Singh allegedly followed women, claiming to capture “street chaos.”
The case came to light after a woman publicly called out the account on Instagram. “Just because my account is public doesn’t mean I consent to be filmed publicly. That is not how consent works,” she wrote in a viral post that tagged the Bengaluru City Police and Karnataka’s Cyber Crime division. The woman revealed she had tried to have the video removed through Instagram’s reporting system, but to no avail, and said the video had subjected her to lewd messages from strangers.
Her plea quickly caught the attention of hundreds of users, including activists and legal experts, who demanded swift action. Though police initially remained silent, they soon launched an investigation that led to Singh’s arrest.
According to NDTV report, efforts to remove the Instagram account have been hampered by the platform’s internal policies. Authorities are now preparing to seek judicial orders to compel Meta, Instagram’s parent company, to permanently take down the offending content.
As the investigation continues, the case has sparked broader debates over privacy, digital consent, and the responsibility of tech companies to act swiftly against harassment online.
