Baramati: The political storm surrounding the investigation into the fatal Baramati plane crash that claimed the life of senior Maharashtra leader Ajit Pawar gathered fresh momentum on Tuesday, with Rohit Pawar, MLA from the Nationalist Congress Party (Sharad Pawar faction), openly questioning the direction and pace of the inquiry.

Addressing a packed press conference, Rohit Pawar described the ongoing investigation as “slow” and “not heading in the right direction,” sharpening his earlier criticism and demanding greater transparency.

His remarks are likely to intensify debate within Maharashtra’s political corridors, where the crash has remained a sensitive and closely watched issue.

Probe pace under fire

While acknowledging that authorities had shown “some movement” after previous concerns were raised, Pawar argued that the investigation still falls short of expectations.

“The inquiry gained traction after questions were asked, but it is nowhere near the speed that such a serious case demands,” he said, stressing that the gravity of the tragedy warrants a more rigorous approach.

‘Suspicious angles’ flagged

Rohit Pawar listed several aspects of the case he termed “suspicious,” including the role of the aircraft operator, the VSR company, alleged political connections, and the aircraft’s technical condition. He also raised concerns about the pilot’s mental state, suggesting that these elements require deeper scrutiny.

Without making direct allegations, Pawar insisted that “every angle must be examined thoroughly,” arguing that public confidence hinges on a probe that is both comprehensive and visibly impartial.

Black box controversy

One of Pawar’s sharpest interventions centered on reports suggesting damage to the aircraft’s black box. He questioned the credibility of such claims, pointing out that flight recorders are specifically engineered to survive high-impact crashes and intense fires.

“From a technical standpoint, black boxes are designed to endure extreme conditions. Therefore, reports of severe damage naturally raise questions,” Pawar remarked.

Technical and financial questions

The MLA further called for an examination of the aircraft’s insurance valuation, fuel levels at the time of the crash, and compliance with aviation safety protocols.

“These are standard but critical aspects of any aviation investigation. They cannot be overlooked,” Pawar said, emphasizing that clarity on such details could help eliminate speculation.

Demand for independent oversight

In a move likely to add pressure on investigators, Pawar proposed the involvement of two foreign investigative agencies to ensure neutrality and technical depth. He also advocated the formation of an independent monitoring committee.

The suggested panel, according to Pawar, should include the Leader of Opposition at both state and national levels, representatives of the Pawar family, party members, and aviation experts.

“Digital evidence needs meticulous analysis. The investigation cannot depend solely on paperwork,” he asserted.

Backing CBI inquiry call

Rohit Pawar also expressed support for Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Sunetra Pawar’s call for a Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) inquiry, describing the demand for an independent probe as “justified.”

“If one objectively evaluates the present investigation, it is difficult to say that it is moving in the right direction,” Pawar said.

‘Not about politics’

Seeking to counter suggestions of political motivation, Pawar insisted that the demands are driven by the need for truth rather than political gain.

“This is not about politics. It is about ensuring a fair, transparent, and unbiased investigation into a tragedy that shocked the state,” he said.

No fresh response yet

Authorities have so far not issued a fresh statement addressing Pawar’s latest remarks. However, his renewed criticism is expected to fuel further discussion over the handling of the case, with opposition leaders likely to echo calls for enhanced oversight.

As questions continue to swirl, the Baramati crash investigation remains under intense public and political scrutiny, with demands for clarity showing no signs of fading.
