Hyderabad: Adverse weather conditions in Hyderabad disrupted air travel on Friday morning, with three flights being diverted from Rajiv Gandhi International Airport (RGIA) due to persistent rain and poor visibility.

An RGIA official confirmed that IndiGo flights from Kolkata, Mumbai, and Pune were diverted to Vijayawada Airport as a precautionary measure amid unstable weather in the region.

IMD issues rain and thunderstorm alerts

The India Meteorological Department (IMD)-Hyderabad issued a fresh warning of light to moderate showers accompanied by intense thundershowers, gusty winds, and a notable drop in temperatures across several districts of Telangana.

In an immediate forecast posted on social media platforms, the IMD notified light rain and thunderstorms with maximum surface wind speed less than 40 kmph very likely to occur in Hyderabad, Jayashankar Bhupalapally, Karimnagar, Mahabubabad, Medchal-Malkajgiri, Nizamabad, Peddapalli, Rajanna Siricilla and Suryapet districts for the next 2 to 3 hours.

These weather conditions are expected to persist throughout the day, according to the IMD.

IndiGo issues travel advisory amid weather delays

As delays and diversions affected operations, IndiGo Airlines posted a travel advisory on X, alerting passengers to plan their commute accordingly:

"The rain has slowed more than just the skies, roads across #Hyderabad are experiencing heavier-than-usual traffic. If you're heading to the airport, we recommend setting off a bit earlier than usual. Please check your flight status on our app or website before you travel. Our teams are doing their best to keep your journey moving as smoothly as possible and are here to assist you at every step.”

Travellers in and out of Hyderabad are advised to check with airlines for real-time updates and plan for possible delays. Local residents are also urged to avoid waterlogged areas and drive cautiously due to slippery roads and reduced visibility.
