Thiruvananthapuram: Widespread rainfall is set to lash parts of Kerala over the coming days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a five-day weather update placing multiple districts under a yellow alert. Residents across the state can expect light to moderate showers through September 27, 2026, with isolated spells of heavy downpours.

The IMD defines a yellow alert as a warning for heavy rainfall measuring between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.

 

The district-wise yellow alert schedule 

  • September 23: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Kottayam, Idukki, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • September 24: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.
  • September 25: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur and Kasaragod.

Bay of Bengal system drives precipitation

The active weather spell is being driven by a deep depression over the Westcentral and adjoining Northwest Bay of Bengal. The weather system is forecasted to move west-northwestwards and cross the North Andhra Pradesh–South Odisha coastline between Visakhapatnam and Gopalpur, near Kalingapatnam, by Wednesday night.

In addition to isolated heavy rain, the weather agency warned that several regions across Kerala will witness lightning, thunderstorms and gusty winds reaching 30 to 40 km/h between September 23 and 26. Public advisories recommend taking precautions against strong squalls and lightning hazards.
