In a landmark administrative move, Ashwini Bhide has been appointed as the first woman commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation, marking a significant moment in Mumbai’s civic governance.

The Maharashtra government has appointed Ashwini Bhide as the Municipal Commissioner of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC), making her the first woman to head India’s richest civic body. She will take charge following the retirement of outgoing commissioner Bhushan Gagrani on March 31, 2026.
A 1995-batch IAS officer, Bhide currently serves as Additional Chief Secretary in the Chief Minister’s Office and is known for her firm administrative approach and focus on execution.

Her appointment comes after other senior bureaucrats, including Sanjay Mukherjee and Aseem Gupta, were considered for the role.
Bhide brings extensive experience in handling large-scale infrastructure projects in Mumbai. She previously served as Managing Director of the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation, where she played a key role in advancing metro expansion projects, including the high-profile Aarey car shed project, which had sparked environmental debates.
She has also worked within the BMC earlier as Additional Municipal Commissioner, giving her operational familiarity with the civic body she will now lead. Her tenure is expected to run until 2030, during which she will oversee critical areas such as urban infrastructure, sanitation, traffic systems, and overall city governance.
Her appointment is being viewed as part of a broader push to strengthen administrative control and accelerate civic project execution in Mumbai. The decision also reflects a growing trend of women being appointed to top leadership roles in Maharashtra’s administration in recent years.
Overall, Bhide’s leadership is expected to play a key role in shaping Mumbai’s infrastructure growth and governance in the coming years.
