New Delhi:Following the brutal terrorist attack in Pahalgam’s Baisaran meadow that killed 25 Indian nationals and one Nepali citizen, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM) chief Asaduddin Owaisi has called for decisive and lawful action against Pakistan. He also expressed support for the Union Cabinet’s recent security measures, including the suspension of the Indus Waters Treaty.

Owaisi, who took part in the all-party meeting convened by the central government, said international law allows India to impose an air and naval blockade on Pakistan in self-defence and to consider sanctions, particularly on arms sales. He questioned the lack of Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) deployment in the area at the time of the attack and the delayed response of the quick reaction team.

Owaisi condemned the attackers’ reported method of targeting victims based on their religion and urged that no false narrative be propagated against Kashmiri civilians or students. “The way terrorists killed people by asking about their religion must be condemned,” he said, adding, “False propaganda against Kashmiris should stop.”

He welcomed the government’s move to suspend the Indus Waters Treaty but raised a logistical question about the storage and management of diverted water. Nonetheless, he affirmed AIMIM’s full support for any further steps taken by the Centre, stressing that the issue transcends party politics.

The meeting was attended by several top leaders, including BJP National President JP Nadda, Union Ministers Kiren Rijiju and S Jaishankar, and Congress President Rahul Gandhi. The 23 April attack in Pahalgam is being described as one of the most severe incidents since the 2019 Pulwama terror strike.

India has since announced firm countermeasures aimed at holding Pakistan accountable for allegedly harbouring terror groups responsible for the latest violence.
