Tamil Nadu may once again be on the brink of being led by a film star

Tamil Nadu has a long and unique tradition of cinema icons stepping into politics—and sometimes going all the way to power. From M G Ramachandran (MGR), who transformed his immense screen popularity into a lasting political legacy, to J Jayalalithaa, who commanded unmatched mass appeal and delivered sweeping electoral victories, the state has repeatedly embraced film stars as leaders.
The leap from cinema to politics has not been smooth for everyone. Despite commanding massive fan followings, stars like Rajinikanth and Kamal Haasan found it difficult to translate on-screen charisma into electoral success. Kamal Haasan’s political experiment with Makkal Needhi Maiam, launched in 2018, struggled to gain ground—failing to win a single seat, with Kamal himself losing from Coimbatore South. Rajinikanth, on the other hand, ultimately stepped back from active politics, announcing in December 2020 that he would not launch a political party, reversing earlier indications of entering the fray in Tamil Nadu.
Now, after many years, another film star appears poised to break through. Vijay has drawn massive crowds during his campaign, especially among youth and urban voters, echoing the fervour once seen during MGR’s rise. Tamil Nadu’s political culture has long celebrated such figures, often elevating them to near-iconic status when they enter public life.
What sets Vijay apart is his campaign approach. He has managed to turn potential negatives into strengths, shaping a narrative that resonates across sections. As someone from the Vellalar community, he seems to have tapped into a segment of anti-incumbency votes—many of which might otherwise have gone to the AIADMK.
With the DMK slipping in current trends and the electoral mood shifting, Vijay’s emergence suggests that Tamil Nadu may once again be on the brink of being led by a film star—reviving a political pattern deeply rooted in its cultural history.
